The Fish Bowl

Mossbacks, which is placed in the Valentine Doller Building, shares the same lively atmosphere as the Fish Bowl next door. When it was gaining its reputation as a premier summer destination, Valentine Doller was a major inhabitant of Put-in-Bay. The building has his name, which is located above the door!

The Fish Bowl is popular for, you guessed it, its giant cocktails served in fishbowls! Open daily at 11 am, they provide the same menu as Mossbacks.

Throughout the summer, live music plays. On the weekends, the DJ plays. This is a classic Put-in-Bay spot, actually. They’re welcoming and fun. Right on Catawba Avenue, one block south of the Hooligans Restaurant

Stopped in on a windy October night. We were the only customers on a cold Wednesday night. We were greeted with a smile and treated to an absolutely amazing Walleye and Perch dinner. Well Done Mossbacks! Thank You for consistently bringing your A-game and delivering a wonderful meal yet again.

I almost exploded! We stopped to eat our first day there at Mossbacks and the amount of food they give you is crazy! I had the shrimp tacos which were wonderful and my husband had a HUGE burger. The onion rings are GREAT, and the sauerkraut balls were FABULOUS! I would suggest you split whatever you’re thinking of getting. We were still full the next day! And we didn’t eat dinner that nite!

Good food, good portions, good value compared to some of the other restaurants on the island, Mossbacks food was priced similarly but better portions. My husband got the special, a 12oz T bone cooked just as he asked and I had the perch and perogies. They were both fabulous.

If you go to Mossbacks, we recommend the onion rings. My son got the walleye and it was huge. I had the veggie sandwich and really enjoyed it. My husband had a hamburger and thought it was really good. Our waitress Michelle was very nice. Appreciated the mints after our lunch.

Amazing Perch! Visited Mossbacks with a large group & thoroughly enjoyed it. Great service and the food was excellent. I had the perch sandwich with fries & Cole slaw The slaw was tasty & the sandwich was double stacked with lightly fried perch. Also reasonably priced Big thumbs up!

Mossbacks Place is nicely decorated, clean, and the service was great. The food was very good also. The family had several menu items and all were satisfied. Wanted to try the fresh Walleye, but didn’t want to pay almost 30 dollars for it so I settled for a chicken sandwich which was very good. They also make a fantastic Bloody Mary!

Mossbacks is a wonderful place for breakfast or lunch anytime My wife & I enjoyed a great meal at this restaurant. The walleye & perch basket was very good, and my wife seemed to enjoy her burger as well. It was one of the more reasonably-priced places on the island, and we were quite satisfied with both the service & the food.

We were seated at Mossbacks immediately on a busy holiday weekend. Really good burgers. Onion rings are really good. I had the Black and Blue salad which was really tasty. Rheingeist Truth in an actual Rheingeist Truth glass which is a touch of excellence for me!

Good food, friendly service, relaxing view summarizes our lunch at Mossbacks… Wheelchair access was available at the side entrance and ample room to maneuver to our window table… Our daughters enjoyed the relaxed lunch after scootering around the island… The service was good and we were not rushed through most of the tables were occupied

Dining in the Historic Valentine Doller Building Mossbacks is located across Bayview Avenue from Put-in-Bay Refuge Harbor at the corner of Catawba Road. The Boardwalk and DeRivera Park are also just across the street. Mossbacks shares the historic Valentine Doller building with the Fish Bowl bar. This historic Put-in-Bay building was named after Valentine Doller, the enigmatic 19th-century patriarch of the Put-in-Bay’s most important family.
I love old buildings and old architecture. I thus enjoyed the “oldness” of this restaurant, the dark woodwork, its furnishings, and decor. They serve breakfast (10 AM-noon), lunch, and dinner. They have seating in the main bar area as well as on the adjacent enclosed patio, which provides nice street-side views. Our server was excellent. She did a great job with our orders, always with a smile.
Their menu includes starters, salads, soups, seafood baskets, steaks, pierogies, burgers, and sandwiches. They also have beers, wines, and cocktails. We tried their Grilled Vegetable Panini (Broccoli, mushrooms, red onions, bell peppers, provolone, and mozzarella cheese, grilled rosemary sourdough bread with marinara on the side) and their Perch & Pierogies (lightly dusted fresh Lake Erie perch with potato and cheese pierogies topped with grilled onions and a side of coleslaw).
I had the perch and pierogies. We stayed in Put-in-Bay several days at the wonderful Put-in-Bay Resort. I tried perch and walleye at a half dozen different places. The fried perch at Mossbacks was my clear favorite. It was indeed lightly dusted with breading and fried just right – not dried out. I loved it. Of course, their pierogies were equally wonderful. I loved them as well.
The pierogies were too lightly fried and so flavorful. My only regret is that we did not return to Mossbacks, during our stay, for more than this single meal. We definitely need to rectify our error on a future visit to South Bass Island.
