Kimberlys Carousel

Kimberlys Carousel Particulars

A historic fixture of downtown Put-in-Bay, Kimberlys Carousel has entertained tourists on the island for over 100 years. This masterpiece was constructed by Allan Herschell. The vintage Carousel looks remarkably the same as it did 100 years ago.

Brilliantly colored creatures circle around the cheerful white and red striped top. One of the rare remaining carousels of its type in the United States, children and adults flock to this island landmark. Enjoy a ride on a pig, chicken, or Pete the Perch, the island choice. Festive melodies spill into the streets as the Kimberlys Carousel entertains her riders.

The History of Kimberlys Carousel

The Allan Herschell Company was the most prolific builder of carousels and other carnival-type park rides. They specialized in transportable devices for touring carnivals. The company produced over 3,000 hand-carved wooden carousels in the early 20th century. They were respected far and wide for their stunning, skillfully crafted carousel equines.

Over the years, the Carousel fell into neglect. The Put-in-Bay luminary, George Stoiber, accepted it upon himself to preserve this critical island institution. He purchased it in the 1980s and labored alongside his wife, June, to refurbish the complete ride and return it to its one-time glory.

Of the 36 authentic horses, just 12 remained undamaged, with most of the paint disappearing from the exterior. The team added revived animals, including Petey the Perch, and June actually painted most of the unique animals. An actual labor of love, the couple comprehended that Kimberlys Carousel is such an essential part of Put-in-Bay chronology.

The island has a lot to deliver for families. We took a daybreak ferry from Kelley's Island to Put in Bay and stayed the day until about 4:00. We leased a golf cart to get around, which was so fun. Golf cart rentals at the ferry drop-off are almost double as expensive as rentals a block away. We rented from Put-in-Bay Golf Carts, great carts, and prices. We visited Butterfly House, Perry's cave and the minigolf, Chocolate Museum, the park, Perry's monument, and the Boardwalk. This was the best day of our trip. Adults and kids both loved Kimberlys Carousel! The Put in Bay central park is beautiful, with amazing playgrounds. Walking around the marina and stores was fun too.

The wife and I went there for our 5th anniversary with the kids; it was lovely scenery, a pleasing atmosphere, great food, and reasonable prices. We enjoy the day riding around in a golf cart site seeing. Would definitely go back. Kids had a blast riding the Kimberlys Carousel, a restored Merry Go Round.

Fun tooling around in a golf buggy. Lots of great eateries. The beaches are all rocky. Glacial grooves can be seen in the state park campgrounds. Planet's largest geode is at Crystal Cave. International Peace Memorial is stunning. Kimberlys Carousel is an excellent place for the kids to have fun.

We make it to Put-in-Bay every summer! Take Miller's Ferry from Catawba Point, rent a golf cart, and consume the day visiting the many shops and restaurants on the island. Stop to drink at the Round Bar and Mojito Bay and hear the entertainment. Kids like the Kimberlys Carousel on the main strip.

We brought the ferry across and saw the island on a Monday. It was slow in the morning, and the groups gathered up negligibly around lunchtime. We leased a golf cart and went all over the island, which was excellent. We kept seeing signs about respecting the community, but a few obnoxious people were on carts, and I could understand why. We only went into a few shops. We just enjoyed the island. It's worth a visit as the island is beautiful, and we loved the Kimberlys Carousel

We just spent five evenings on the island at the very nice Put-in-Bay Villas. The vacation weekend gathering in town was pretty fun and a bit crazy. But into the week, it calmed, and we saw a lot of sites that most people probably don't even know existed. So check out some of the parks, museums, and visitor centers. We enjoyed biking our way around to various spots like Kimberlys Carousel. It allows you to see the scenery in a slower mode than zipping along in a golf cart:) We thoroughly enjoyed our put-in-bay excursions and will return!

The island is home to Put in Bay, the fun family center of Lake Erie, and a delightful place to visit with many restaurants, shops, bars, and live entertainment during the season. But there is more to the island than the village. There are wineries, a state park, exciting homes, a nature preserve, and the Perry Peace memorial. There are places to stay in town near the action or places farther out in more peaceful surroundings. Lake breezes and vistas make for a pleasant change of speed. The kids had a great time at Kimberlys Carousel.

We booked a hotel in Port Clinton, then took the ferry for a day and had a fantastic day! We took the first ferryboat over, had Breakfast, and then hit the main interests, the wineries, the caves, and the restaurants. We were done with the main attractions around dinner time and then drove the golf cart about the island and had some beverages until it was time to leave. Our last stop was a fantastic ride on Kimberlys Carousel. One day is about all you require to visit everything, but the island is wonderful, and there are lots of little parks all about it. I suggest leasing a golf cart to get around. It's super fun! There's so much to do for families with children and a lot for adults! This is a wonderful spot for a weekend escape!
