Put-in-Bay Cookes Castle Fund Raiser
Put-in-Bay Cooke’s Castle will benefit from The Courthouse Players, a theatrical group of lawyers and judges, who will present the historical play “The Andersonville Trial,” on the grounds of the South Bass Lighthouse, near Put-in-Bay Ohio, on August 19, 2017, at 6 p.m.
The drama tells the true story of Confederate Capt. Henry Wirz was the only person tried for war crimes after the Civil War. Wirz was in charge of the notorious Andersonville prisoner-of-war camp in Georgia, where 14,000 Union soldiers died of starvation and disease.
The play is being presented by Friends of Stone Lab to raise funds for the endowment established to support Put-in-Bay Cookes Castle on Lake Erie’s Gibraltar Island. Jay Cooke built the island castle as his summer home in 1864. The Philadelphia banker and Sandusky native sold war bonds to help the Union to victory and became known as the financier of the Civil War.
Gibraltar Island is also the home of Stone Lab, Ohio State University’s island research campus on Lake Erie; — it sits directly across from Put-in-Bay. Since 2009, the Courthouse Players have presented legal dramas at various historical and/or non-profit venues. Last October, the cast performed “The Andersonville Trial” on the 150th anniversary of the actual trial in the United States Court of Federal Claims in Washington, D.C., where the original trial occurred. “We’ve been presenting Andersonville longer than the Civil War lasted,” said Canton Law Director Joe Martuccio, director of Courthouse profit Players.
Tickets for the production are $25 per person and must be ordered by reservation. All proceeds will go for the renovation of Put-in-Bay Cooke’s Castle.
