Put-in-Bay Blessing of the Fleet
May 9 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
Since ancient times ports around the world have gathered their vessels together for a blessing of the fleet for another year of safe travels. Put-in-Bay gathers our Put-in-Bay Ferry boats, Life Flight helicopters, Coast Guard, EMS, Water Taxi’s, and other vessels each year for a blessing of the fleet by clergy from our Put-in-Bay Churchs. This year marks the 34th annual celebration of the event. Cookies, Hot Chocolate, and Coffee will be served on the dock. The event is scheduled to start at 11:00 AM at the Fox’s Dock located in downtown Put-in-Bay.
Blessing Of The Fleet Goes Back Generations
The Blessing of the Fleet ceremony for many years has welcomed Seafarers and their vessels from across generations. This time-honored tradition brings locals and visitors alike together to bless the ships, planes, water taxis, and other service-related boats and aircraft and pray for protection from storms and other catastrophes. Local clergy from St. Paul’s Church and Mother Of Sorrows Church will preside over the event and offer blessings.
There is something mystifying about the time-honored traditions passed down from generation to generation within the seaport communities. Put-in-Bay Ohio locals and visitors alike join together to offer a blessing to the various seafaring vessels among the island’s fleet. This tradition is in place to safeguard the vessels against the coming year’s storms and protect the fleet, the passengers, and the crew from harm. Put-in-Bay’s local clergy from St Paul’s Church and Mother of Sorrows Church will be present to bless the many vessels that serve South Bass Island. This is a great family-oriented event and a great place to see all of the variety of vessels that service Put-in-Bay.
