Put-in-Bay Police Chief Hired Will Clean Up Steve Korossy Debacle

The village of Put-in-Bay Mayor Ruth Scarpelli appointed a 27-year veteran of the Sandusky Police Department, Michael Frank, as interim Put-in-Bay police chief to handle the day-to-day operations of the Put-in-Bay Police Department until the situation with fired Chief Ric Lampela is resolved. Chief Lampela was indicted on four misdemeanor charges at the end of February. . After pleading not guilty, Lampela was scheduled to appear in Ottawa County Municipal Court in late May.

Lampela remains on administrative leave at full pay. In the meantime, Frank has begun to evaluate the Put-in-Bay Police Department and to hire officers for the 2015 season. He is being paid the rate of $25 per hour. In a typical season, between 20 and 30 police officers are hired as seasonal officers for the police department.

In a press release on March 1st, Mayor Scarpelli said: “I believe Mr. Frank’s law enforcement background, his supervisory experience, his education, and his relationship with local law enforcement agencies will benefit the Village Police Department.” Frank’s resume is impressive. Not only was he a lieutenant with the Sandusky Police Department, but he served as part-time police chief for the Village of Rocky Ridge. He most recently worked for the Erie County Adult Probation Department as its program manager in the residential enforcement division.

Frank has a degree in criminal justice from the University of Cincinnati and is a graduate of the executive management program of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy. Mayor Scarpelli reportedly said there had been no discussion on whether the appointment could lead to Frank taking over full-time if Lampela is not retained. The Put-in-Bay Village Council will meet on Monday, May 4th, and Monday, May 11th. Frank did not come to the April Village Council meeting, but it is led to believe he will come to one of the May Council meetings.

The Police Chief States Steve Korossy Is Not Welcome

According to one report, Frank is not planning to have Officer Steve Korossy return to the island department. Steve Korrossy involvement with the police department has been controversial ( See Put-in-Bay Resort story) during the department’s recent problems, and we hear criminal felony charges are forthcoming.
