Put-in-Bay News March 2014

Put-in-Bay News congratulates Karina Kowalski, Put-in-Bay High School Class of 2013, for making the Wittenberg University Dean’s List and on being selected to membership in the national Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.

Put-in-Bay Village Administrator Doug Knauer recently gave the Island Girl Scouts an introductory lesson in woodworking at the Town Hall. The lesson included proper use of handheld saws and tracing patterns correctly. Stations were carefully set up so the girls could practice their new skills.

Suzanne Kostura told us after the airboat quit running for the season in mid-February that her husband, Joe, was bowing out of the service altogether. She said he might haul a bit of freight at times in the future, but commercial passenger service would a thing of the past. We can well understand the difficulties and numerous problematic issues associated with operating such a service. Thanks, Joe and Suzanne, for the great service these last few years.

Scott Sneller and Todd Navarre put many hours into refinishing the gym floor upstairs in the Town Hall over the winter break. It looks gorgeous! Eagle watchers have spotted the Pinky Pond eagles up in the trees by their nest this winter. We just found out about a novel published by Greenleaf Book Group Press and written by Doug Cooper. It’s called “Outside In” and is set at Put-in-Bay. We’ll have more about this in a coming issue.

Lisa Brohl posted in Lake Erie Islands Chapter of the Black Swamp Conservancy Gene Zajac gave an entertaining presentation on How Old is It? at the Put-in-Bay Town Hall on February 1st. Although the weather did not permit star gazing, everyone had fun trying to guess how old objects in the universe were and passing around meteorites!

Put-in-Bay News is reporting that this summer’s Island Churches’ Vacation Bible Camp will be held Monday, August 4th-8th from 9:30 a.m. to Noon downstairs in the Put-in-Bay Town Hall. This year’s program is entitled ‘International Spy Academy’ and is open
to kids from grades K-6th. Should you have any questions or concerns please let Valerie Kowalski know.

Keith Kahler, Tammy Kahler, and Kelly Mohn, of Put-in-Bay Emergency Medical Services, recently attended continuing EMT education to meet certification requirements. The Partners for Life Conference 2014 they attended was coordinated through Life Flight. New student Andy Mohn joined the Mash Bash in order to meet some of the Life Flight crew and continue the good rapport established between the Life Flight crews and Put-in-Bay EMS.

Keith Kahler, EMT-P, who is the current Put-in-Bay EMS Manager and functions as a paramedic, fire and EMS instructor and fire inspector, was one of the speakers in a seminar entitled, “Ain’t Got Time For Dat.” The session dealt with the ingestion of alcohol that may cause acute alcohol intoxication. When consumed
in large amounts over a relatively short period, the clinical features are much like those induced by sedative-hypnotic agents.
