Put-in-Bay Diary Jan. 1st-North Bass Island. John Glauser brings a boat over from Middle Bass for the Ullr Fest that takes place to appease the God of Ice and Snow. The event takes place on the waterfront between the Boardwalk and A-Dock.

Put-in-Bay Diary-Mon., Jan. 2nd – Chamber meeting takes place at Town Hall after lunch. Members of the Put-in-Bay EMS enjoy a holiday gathering and dinner at Blu Luna.

Put-in-Bay Diary– Tues., Jan. 3rd – Last day of ferry service! Thick fog all day.

Put-in-Bay Diary-Wed., Jan. 4th – Ouch! Wind and cold all day. The Crew’s Nest crew is taking down the Christmas decorations at the
Doller Estate (aka Put-in-Bay Winery).

Put-in-Bay Diary -Thurs., Jan. 5th – Village Administrator Steve Riddle, Clerk of Mayors Court Karen Goaziou and Fiscal Officer Kelly Niese check out Frederick property on Erie Street which the Village purchased. One of the answers on the Jeopardy TV how is “CANADA’S SOUTHERNMOST POINT and Southernmost Point LIES WITHIN THIS GREAT LAKE. There’s light snow. The new 2017 Miller Boat Line schedule is released.

Thurs., Jan. 5th – Mother Mary from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is out or chalking doors and blessing island home on this 12th day of Christmas! The ice returns for the Ice returns for the first night of dart league at Topsy Turvey’s.

Fri., Jan. 6th – At 7 a.m., the temperature at the SBI Lighthouse dips below ten degrees. That’s great for making ice in the lake.

Sat., Jan. 7th – The Put-in-Bay Panther Basketball Team hosts the Danbury Lakers from Marblehead in a morning game.

Sun., Jan. 8th – There’s ice almost everywhere except on the east side of the island. Russ and Lisa Brohl entertain Marty and Kelly Faris and Jeff and Kendra Koehler at their Mitchell Rd. home with a wonderful turkey dinner.

Mon., Jan. 9th – The DeRivera Park Trust holds its monthly meeting at the Town Hall in the afternoon. Monthly Meeting. Some of those in the audience would like to see the woods sold to the Put-in-Bay Twp. Park District for permanent protection from development. Was that Travis Kowalski we saw on the ice?

Tues., Jan. 10th – If you like exciting airplane rides, you would love the flying to or from the mainland. Once the ice melted on the runways and the planes started to fly, the winds picked up and made for some on-the-edge-of-your-seat flights. After the sunset, the winds picked up to 40 knots.

Put-in-Bay Diary -Wed., Jan. 11th – There’s open water between Put-in-Bay and Middle Bass.

Put-in-Bay Diary     Thurs., Jan. 12th – Gene Zajac hosts a light-hearted winter astronomy program called “Not Your Parents Universe” at the Town Hall in the evening.

Fri., Jan. 13th – Among those representing the island at the Cleveland Boat Show’s Put-in-Bay pavilion are the crews from the Crew’s Nest, Put-in-Bay Winery, Boardwalk and The Keys, plus Laurie Utterberg from the Sun Stoppers and Brad and Angie Ohlemacher from the new Banyan Bay II condominiums. You could visit the Ohio Sea Grant booth at the boat show, where experts discussed Lake Erie issues and educational opportunities available at Stone Laboratory!

Sat., Jan. 14th – Friends help Pinky Batt celebrate his birthday with a chili potluck at Sue Amrine’s barn. In Avon Lake, Barb Chrysler and Elizabeth Heineman attend the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club’s Winter Doldrums gathering.

Sun., Jan. 15th – The lake is so still that from the air you can’t make out if the lake has a thin sheet of ice or it’s open water. It turns out to be a thin layer of ice. George Stoiber and Patrick Green are among those walking their dogs downtown in the late afternoon.

Mon., Jan. 16th – Miller Boat Line’s M/V Wm Market breaks ice as it leaves it downtown dock at 8:20 a.m. to head to the Lime Kiln where service resumes for eleven days.

Tues., Jan 17th – A dozen volunteers from the Put-in-Bay fire department were called out for a vehicle fire at Kit Knaser’s property. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames when the firemen arrived. Justine Bianchi celebrating her 95th birthday having dinner at Tipper’s. She was joined by her little brother Louis Heineman.

Wed., Jan. 18th – There’s no ice in the Bay and Bob Glauser is seen plying through the harbor in his Lyman.

Thurs., Jan. 19th – St. Paul’s holds its monthly Vestry meeting in the morning and it’s decided not to have another one until March. A group is at the post office just before the postmaster closes up for the day. The discussion topics include colds and flu, island zoning issues, laundromats and more.

Fri., Jan. 20th – Rain and fog in AM. The ferry runs and the planes don’t fly, so the mail comes to the island by boat. Plenty of fishermen are in boats on the water between Catawba Island and South Bass Island.

Sat., Jan. 21st – It’s a 50-degree-plus day at Put-in-Bay. At the Panther basketball game, the parents of the team members join them on the court for a Senior Day ceremony. Afterward, there is a Senior Class buffet brunch fundraiser at the Old Forge Creperie.

Mayor McCann holds a special afternoon meeting to discuss and take action on the Victory Ave. waterline project which would take see the installation of an 8-inch water line from the Crew’s Nest pool area to the end of Victory where the road turns. It is part of a waterline looping plan to improve service on the west side of the Village all the way to Peach Point. The Council of the Village of Put-in-Bay also approved contracting with Poggemeyer Design Group to work up a cost analysis for running a waterline from the mainland to the island.

Sun., Jan. 22nd – This is the deadline day for feedback on the Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce’s new island guide for 2017. Rob Mohn is celebrating a birthday. Up on North Bass, Ruth Stonerook finds an antique glass bottle stopper while walking the beach. This is the ninth one she has found over the years.

Mon., Jan. 23rd – It’s a really rainy morning on the island. Island Ambassador Peter Huston posts that the 2017 Chamber of Commerce Island Guide has gone to press. If you are in Las Vegas you might run into Linda Mahony from the Candy Bar with her two daughters, Amanda and Karen Goaziou, and Linda Parker.

Tues., Jan. 24th – Michael McIntyre is one of the passengers on the 2:30 p.m. ferry to Put-in-Bay. What a treat is was to ride with
him.

Wed., Jan. 25th – The school basketball team heads to the mainland to play a game against St. Joe’s.

Thurs., Jan. 26th – With the weather cooling off, this is the last day the ferries run until it warms up again.

Fri., Jan. 27th – Ed and Paul Hubner from Put-in-Bay Rd. are vacationing in South Padre Island near the Mexican border. Ed says
there are no signs of a great wall going up yet.

Sat., Jan. 28th – It’s the last Saturday of the month at Put-in-Bay just like everywhere else in the world.

Sun., Jan. 29th – In the morning there is a Pancake breakfast by volunteers at the fire station to benefit the island’s department.

Mon., Jan. 30th – The Put-in-Bay Gazette is printed in Sandusky.

Tues., Jan. 31st – At the library, there is a “Connex” do-it-yourself science project kit gathering to put together a robotic spider and a robotic beetle.
