BENCH DEDICATION FOR DANNY FRENCH

News May 2018 Reports the bench donated by friends of Richard and Joan French in memory of their son, Danny French, will be dedicated by Deacon Mike Leahy at the Massie Cliffside Preserve on Sunday, May 13th at 4 p.m. The French Family is extremely grateful for the kindness and generosity of so many people. They also would like to thank Lisa Brohl and the Lake Erie Islands Conservancy for organizing the purchase, engraving, and dedication as well as Richard Gump for the placement of the bench.

COMMUNITY SWIM/SAIL REGISTRATION

It’s hard to believe, but soon it will be summer! Put-in-Bay Community Swim Sail will be offering swimming and sailing classes again this year to kids ages 4-18. The classes take place over 5 weeks starting June 11th. Swimming classes are $105 for the program, and sailing classes start at $460. Sailors who plan on racing will have additional fees. There is even a “start opti sailing” class for the 5-7-year-olds that introduces what the older kids will be learning.

Details about classes and online registration can be found at www.pibswimsail.org. The deadline is May 26th. There are other critical dates for the Put-in-Bay Community Swim/Sail program. The first is the annual Spaghetti Dinner and raffle, which will be held on Friday, June 15th, at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club. Awards Night will be on Friday, July 13th, also at the Yacht Club. On Saturday, July 14th, the Gardner Trophy 50-year Gala will be taking place. Mark your calendars now and watch for more information as each event draws near. If you have any questions, contact C.C. Wisniewski at pibswimsail@gmail.com

PIB EMS TACO FUNDRAISER

May News 2018 reports the Put-in-Bay EMS will be holding an all-you-can-eat Taco fundraiser at the Put-in-Bay Town Hall on Sunday, May 6th, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or until sold out. Everyone is welcome to enjoy a great lunch and help raise some cash for the PIB EMS. See you there.

LAKE STURGEON TO BE RELEASED

Apparently, things are on track for a Fall 2018 release of iconic lake sturgeon into the Maumee River, the first time in Ohio. This will be very interesting since the fish have all but disappeared in Lake Erie. The fish can be giant compared to anything in the lake now.

NEWS MAY 2018 REPORTS DAVIS-BESSE  NUCLEAR POWER PLANT TO SHUT DOWN IN 2020

For the first time, the operating endpoints for FirstEnergy Corp.’s Davis-Besse nuclear power plant in Ottawa County; its Perry nuclear power plant east of Cleveland in Perry, Ohio, and its twin-reactor Beaver Valley atomic power complex west of Pittsburgh in Shippingport, Pa., have been put in writing by a corporate subsidiary. When the power plant that can be seen on the horizon west of the islands shuts down, the dangers associated with a nuclear plant meltdown will be a thing of the past for the Lake Erie Islands.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

If you really want to get to know the island, meet island people, and have a lot of fun, you might want to consider volunteering your time at some of the events that take place each summer on the island. Events coming up in the next few weeks all need a lot of helping hands to make them fun and successful. If you want to help out at the Music Festival in June, contact Scott Market or the museum. The conservancy group and Nature & Wildlife Center can always use volunteers.

The Conservancy has its Middle Bass Music Festival coming up, and it’s always fun to visit another island. The island churches are always looking for volunteers. Mother of Sorrows sponsors the Pooch Parade, and St. Paul’s will have events over the summer, and they can use some help there, too. Check with Tina Rogers at the Chamber of Commerce office at the Depot. They have events throughout the summer and into the fall that take a lot of volunteers. If you’re into gardening, the Put-in-Bay Garden Club can also use volunteers who want to beautify the island.

They take care of the flower baskets and landscaped flower beds in the downtown park, and they work on keeping the Bathing Beach Clean. Call Barb Hunter at (216) 789-9003 if you’ve got a green thumb. If you’re into meeting lots of people and selling miscellaneous stuff, contact Marsha Baumert
at the museum’s Resale Shop. There are even more volunteer opportunities on the islands, but we can’t list them all here.

$60,000 MATCHING DONATION!

In other news May 2018, the Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center has been fundraising to build an addition to the center. We have made the porch and now need to move forward on the much-needed office, library, and expansion of the inside exhibit space. We have been offered an exciting challenge to raise funds for completing the second phase. A very generous anonymous donor has offered to match funds we introduced in 2018 up to $60,000.

Our staff and volunteers are working to find grants to help meet this challenge, and the Wildlife Center will continue our fundraising events in 2018, which we hope you will support, but more is needed. We, the board members, are appealing to you, our friends, to consider donating to the building fund so we can meet this challenge. The bid for the building addition is $178,000; we have $35,600 in our Building Addition Fund after the back-porch project. We require $142,400 to complete the acquisition. Remember, every dollar you give is matched up to $60,000. Your donation is worth double the amount you send to us.

HAVING TROUBLE GETTING STUDENT WORKERS FROM OVERSEAS

Put-in-bay News May 2018- We have talked to some island employers who are having difficulty getting student workers from foreign countries who want to come to the U.S. to work for the summer. The government has been reducing the number of student workers in the last few years. Put-in-Bay businesses have grown to depend on these workers for the busy tourist season. They will have to wait and see what happens this summer. There will be more discussion at the State of the Island address.

WE ARE TAKING UP CORNHOLE

If what we read in Put-in-Bay News May 2018 is true, we will take up corn hole immediately. It seems the 7th Annual Ohio’s Largest Corn Hole Tournament is taking place, as it usually does, on South Bass Island at the Put-in-Bay Resort and Conference Center. We will win some of that $2,000 cash and other prizes, or maybe even come home with the $500 first prize.

The tournament is on Friday, May 11th, and Saturday, May 12th, at the Put-in-Bay Resort and Conference Center on their large pool deck. It is sponsored by Budweiser. On Saturday night, after the Kings (or Queens) of Cornhole are crowned, everyone is invited to Mr. Ed’s Bar & Grille for a fun party with live entertainment and reduced drink prices!
