Put in Bay School News July 2017 Island Fun & Education

Although it is summer we still have school news! Many of our Put-in-Bay School students are taking advantage of learning opportunities outside the school calendar year. Mrs. Jane Ruthsatz is teaching elementary students in summer school for six weeks; sophomores Max Schneider and Jack Booker attended the Hugh O’Brian Leadership Seminar; freshman Elena Schroeder participated in Camp Med at the University of Toledo, and a number of Put-in-Bay school students are taking online courses to earn college credit. Learning doesn’t take a break for our students!

Put-in-Bay Graduation last month was a memorable one. We would like to thank the staff at the Perry Victory and International Peace Memorial for providing the beautiful venue for this event. We would also like to thank our scholarship donors for providing over $31,000 in local scholarships for our graduates. The following is a list of scholarships each of our graduates received:

Ericson Booker – Cameo Pizza Scholarship & Fitzgerald Family Scholarship

Kaylyn Goebel – Acorn Sportsman Club Scholarship, Earl J. Johnson Scholarship &
Lonz Foundation Scholarship

Tyler King – Browns Backers Scholarship, The Perry Group Scholarship & Lee Miller
Scholarship

Carter Pugh – Leadership, Ottawa County Scholarship, Ricky Dysert Scholarship, Genoa Bank Scholarship, Mayor’s Scholarship, Jack Matia Scholarship & Heineman Memorial Scholarship

Sophia Schroeder – Magruder Hospital Scholarship, Browns Backers Scholarship, Jeffery

Verhoff Scholarship, Harlan/Rohrbacher Scholarship & Market Family Scholarship

The long-time teacher, Ms. Amy Huston retired this year and plans to pursue other adventures, which include working at the Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center. We will miss Amy’s positive impact she had on each child. She took pride in her job and it showed. Good luck Amy and enjoy your new endeavors! In addition, Ms. Shannon Casserlie resigned earlier this year.

Filling Amy and Shannon’s positions will be Ms. Johnna Danes and Ms. Riley Conway. Ms. Danes will teach grades 4 – 6 Math and Science and Ms. Conway will teach grades 4 – 6 Language Arts and Reading. Both of these ladies look forward to moving to the island in the coming weeks and meeting their students!Ms. Teri Pierce will return next year on a part-time basis, teaching art and yearbook.

We have hired Ms. Liz Knauer on a part-time basis to teach seventh grade Language Arts and grades 4 – 6 Social Studies. Liz has been a substitute teacher for the Put-in-Bay High School for many years and we look forward to having her be part of our faculty.

Summer is a time for completing a long “to-do” list of maintenance projects making school news. That list includes, but is not limited to, the following: paint stairwells leading to the locker rooms, wax all tile floors, shampoo all carpets, power wash building, clean all windows, clear all downspouts, install a new water dispenser in the gym hallway, repair a broken pipeline under restroom floor and install a door between the art room and adjoining classroom.

In other school news, The Campbell Soup Company has announced that its Labels for Education Program will be coming to an end due to declining participation. The members of the Put in Bay School Computer Club would like to thank all of you who saved labels for us over the past years. It has given us the opportunity to purchase technology for our club. Our most recent purchase (using the remainder of our Campbell labels) was a Canon Power Shot camera! The Computer Club maintains the school’s website.

The club also offers technology sessions for adult community members. A schedule for the 2017-18 Put in Bay school year will be posted on the website this fall. Again, we are greatly appreciative of your support! Although the Campbell’s program is ending, we ask that you continue to save the Box Tops for Education Labels for our club.

Congratulations go out to Elena Schroeder who was selected to attend CampMed this summer at the University of Toledo. Only 39 students from Ohio were selected for this honor. Way to go Elena! Put in Bay School Parents will be receiving information explaining policy changes for the 2016-17 school year. In the meantime, please mark your calendar for the scheduled vacation days this coming year. More school news to come next month!
