Put-in-Bay Tree Commission meets For Arbor Day
Sixteen people from the Put-in-Bay Tree Commission attended the 9th Annual Put-in-Bay Arbor Day Celebration on Friday, April 28. Three Bur Oak trees were planted on the Put-in-Bay Village property at the Shore Villa Estates. These trees are a hard choice for the rocky shoreline. The Council of the Village of Put-in-Bay provides funding for the event.
Kelly Faris, Chair of the Put-in-Bay Village Tree Commission, gave opening remarks, in which he quoted an article from National Graphic Magazine “We incorporate the rich metaphors that trees provide: We turn over a new leaf and branch out, ideas blossom and bear fruit. Though our momentum is sapped, our resolve remains deep-rooted, and yet there are times when we can’t see the forest for the trees.”
After the remarks, Annie Parker sang the poem Trees by Joyce Kilmer, which ends with the line, “Poems are made by fools like me, but only God can make a tree.” In the nine years since its creation by the Village of Put-in-Bay, the Tree Commission has been instrumental in planting more than thirty trees in various locations in the Village.
The Village of Put-in-Bay has been named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to the goals and principles of the Arbor Day Foundation: a tree commission board, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. The Village of Put-in-Bay, Ohio, is the smallest Tree City USA in the State of Ohio.
The first Arbor Day was held in 1872 in Nebraska. Today, Arbor Day is observed in over 50 countries, from Brazil to Korea, China to Venezuela. The Arbor Day Foundation is a million-member nonprofit conservation and education organization whose mission is to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees.
