Put-in-Bay School News August 2018

In School News August 2018 we report our cross-country program begins a new era. Veteran coach Randi Wertenbach will no longer be at the helm after retiring from eleven successful seasons. She will pass the baton to Adam and Johnna Danes who will co-coach the cross-country teams. They look forward to the challenge. We also look forward to the start of a fall sailing team. Coach Coralee Wisniewski began the program this past spring and we decided to carry it over into a fall schedule. Good luck sailing team! Last, but certainly not least, we return a solid volleyball team. Coach Craig Schuffenecker’s squad begins to play on August 28th when they travel to Toledo Scott High School. Go Panthers!

The first day of school for students is Monday, August 27th. Letters will be sent informing parents of school supplies needed to begin the school year. Students new to our school district should register at least one week prior to the first day of school. When school does begin on August 27th, we would like parents to adhere to the following guidelines when dropping off and/or picking up their children:

1. No parking/waiting on the sidewalk (ball field side of Concord).
2. No parking behind the cars in the parking lot.
3. No parking across the street on Catawba (heading to State Park). All drop-offs and pick-ups will take place along Catawba Ave. heading into town. For students walking or riding their bikes to school, the corner of Concord and Catawba will be monitored by crossing guards, school faculty and/or local police to ensure a safe crossing.

In Other School News August 2018   Our school’s attendance policy has changed considerably with House Bill 410 being passed. Instead of counting days absent, schools now must keep track of hours absent. Excessive absences will now be reported to the Ottawa County Juvenile Court. The new definition for excessive absences is: absent 38 or more hours in one month or 65 or more hours in one school year. Prior to filing a complaint with the court parents will be notified, followed by an absence intervention plan. Complete details of House Bill 410 will be sent home. Parents are advised to make appointments and plan vacations on the following dates that school will not be in session:

– September 1 – 3 (Labor Day)
– October 20 – 22 (Appointment Day)
– November 21 – 25 (Thanksgiving)
– December 22 – January 2 (Christmas Break)
– February 23 – March 3 (Winter Break)
– April 20 – April 28 (Spring Break)
– May 23 – LAST DAY OF SCHOOL

The school day will be lengthened this year by six minutes. The school will continue to start at 8 a.m. Students are asked to arrive at 7:50 a.m. Primary elementary students will begin lunch dismissal at 11:50 a.m., followed by grades four to six. Grades 7 – 12 students will be dismissed for lunch at noon. All students are to return from lunch at 12:50 p.m. to begin classes at 1 p.m. Elementary students will be dismissed after school at 3:16 instead of 3:10 p.m., while high school students will end the day at 3:21 instead of 3:15 p.m.

These changes allow us to meet state requirements for hours of instruction and to have a full week off at Easter instead of an extended weekend and to be out before Memorial Day weekend. Student handbooks will be sent home the first day of school. Parents are advised to pay particular attention to the school dress code.

Lastly in School News August 2018 We would like to introduce our new guidance counselor, Ms. Margie Warnicke. She has spent the past twelve years at Perkins High School as their high school counselor and worked many years for Put-in-Bay Golf Carts here on the island. Margie lives in Port Clinton with her husband, Todd and four-year-old twins, Ava and Trace. Welcome to Put-in-Bay School Ms. Warnicke! We will have our annual school open house on Wednesday, September 5th, from 3:24 – 4:30 p.m. A reminder will be sent home a week prior to open house
