School News Put-in-Bay December 2010 What You Need To Know!

Sports Coach Craig Schuffenecker’s Put-in-Bay School Boys’ basketball team has started a very successful 2010-11 campaign. The boys were 5 – 1 as of December 20th. Sophomore Shawn Seaberg attributes the team’s success to “hard work, post-play, and team rapport.” Senior Brian Thwaite leads the team in scoring with 11.6 points per game, and Sophomore Wyatt Auger is second on the team with 7.3 points per game. Other team members include Max Leicher, Pat McCann, Dallas Mohn, Art Wolf, Cody Porche, and Casey Pippert-Ladd. The team looks to finish the season strong with nine more contests.School News Put-in-Bay December 2010 Photo of Basketball Team

The Junior High School Put-in-Bay Panthers have also had a successful start to the season. The team consists of the entire 7th and 8th grades, with members Elliot Kowalski, Gunnar Auger, Meredith Engel, Jessica Krueger, and Ian Pippert- Ladd. The team won their first game against Mackinac 30-4. Elliot and Jessica both had ten points in that game. Since then, the team has played two more games and has been on their losing end. Nevertheless, the team plays with great excitement and enthusiasm.

The girl’s basketball team was 1 – 5 in December but was competitive in each loss. They have been involved in some exciting games thus far and are committed to finishing the season on the winning side. Come to the school on a Saturday and support the Panthers!

Ms. Susan Harrington’s archery team got another opportunity to show off their skills as they traveled to Mackinac Island. Our island neighbors to the north were very impressed with the level of competition we have attained and felt it was a great learning experience for their kids. And finally, the archery team, cheerleaders, and basketball teams wish to thank all the people who made the trip to Mackinac Island and supported the Panthers. We had a great time. Having so many people follow us was a bonus!

Help Finding College Money-On Tuesday, January 18, from 1:00-3:00 pm in the Library, parents of seniors can get help with
particular questions about applying for financial aid for their son/daughter’s college. A representative from BGSU Firelands will explain the process and answer parents’ questions. There will also be time for confidential one-on-one questions, so be sure to mark your calendar now and plan to attend this important meeting.

Academics- On Friday, January 28, Mr. Paul Genzman will conduct the 11th Annual Science Olympiad. Students will compete in many events, such as the strongest bridge made from popsicle sticks, preventing an egg from breaking from 15 feet, and several science-oriented quiz competitions. The public is encouraged to attend this fun day! Mr. Craig Schuffenecker will host the school’s first  Annual Put-in-Bay History Day at Put-in-Bay High School on May 24th, 2011. Our students will dress up as different people from history, with more details to be announced as we get closer to this event. This will be a great way to make history come alive in the classroom. If you have any good costume ideas, let our students know!

Mr. Ken Harwood, Put-in-Bay High School Class of 1966, sent Ms. Christie Ontko’s third-grade class a box of school supplies and educational materials about “Smokey, the Bear!” Ken lives in Jacksonville, Florida, and tries to visit Put-in-Bay whenever he can. Thanks, Ken, for thinking about our school kids! The high school Terra Technical College Quiz Bowl Tournament, scheduled for December 10th, was postponed due to bad weather. Our Academic Challenge Team looks forward to this event being rescheduled in the near future. Mrs. Linda Rence has been working with these students since the start of the year in preparation for such tournaments.

Thank you if you have not heard; Muriel Sneller and Barb Cooper decided to end their librarian careers at the end of December. The staff and students at Put-in-Bay School would like to thank them for their many years of service. Many students have checked out books and materials with Muriel and Barb over the years. Thank you for finding what we wanted and ordering what we needed. You will be missed. Carol Romey from Elida, Ohio, was in St. John in the Caribbean for her and her husband’s niece’s wedding. The ferry to the island is not as lovely as the Miller, but much warmer this time of year!!
