Local Senior Center News May 2016

Senior Center News-Spring is in full bloom! The rest of our ‘snowbirds’ are starting to show up & we want to welcome them home! At the same time, we are missing some of our regulars that are back to work with their seasonal jobs and businesses. We want to encourage them to join activities still when they can. The island is starting to bustle as more businesses open, and we look forward to a fun, safe and prosperous season.

Did you know that May is OAM “Older Americans Month”? Here at the Put-in-Bay Senior Center, we recognize that older adults are trailblazers-advocating for themselves, their peers, & their communities-paving the way for future generations. We appreciate the value of inclusion and support in helping our seniors successfully contribute to & benefit from our wonderful island community. The Senior Center provides opportunities to enrich the lives of our “Un-Seniors” by offering programs that engage and promote activity, wellness, and social involvement.

In April, we enjoyed learning “The ABCs of Accounting,” taught by Gail McCracken. Our “Soup & a Show” and “Wii Bowling & Pizza” nights were well attended, and a great time was had by all. Our Senior Lunches are held at Tipper’s every Thursday at noon. Please make your reservation by signing up at the Senior Center or calling the center at (419) 285-5501 by 12 p.m. on Wednesday. This is very important as we must let Tipper’s kitchen know the lunch count by 12 p.m. Wednesday so they can plan accordingly for these delicious and fun Senior Lunches!

The good people at the Put-in-Bay EMS continue to take Blood Pressure every Monday at 10:00 am during the Coffee Social. Feel free to get yours checked, as this is an excellent service they provide. The “60+ Clinic” is a free program for those 60 and older. It’s held at the Senior Center every 4th Thursday of the month. The date for May is Thursday the 26th, so if you’d like to take advantage of this wonderful program, please call 419-734-6800 to make your appointment.

We will be hosting several special activities again in May: First, on May 7th at 4:30 p.m., we’ll be gathering at the Senior Center for a “Kentucky Derby Party”, then on May 11th from 10-2 p.m. the “Spring Senior Day” is being held at Camp Perry Clubhouse with a Wild-Wild- West Theme; The cost is $6 and includes Entertainment, Senior Hall of Fame Awards, Door Prizes, 50/50 raffle, Vendor Booths and much more! This event is open to any Ottawa Co. senior…let’s show everyone why we call ourselves the “Un-Seniors,”

Finally, on Thursday, May 26th, we’ll head to Fifth Third Field for Senior Day to cheer on the Toledo Mud Hens! For additional information, please check out posted flyers at the Senior Center. Our regular weekly events continue with aerobic dance, strength training, coffee socials, aquamotion, yoga, Senior Lunch at Tippers, and many other activities. Don’t forget – even if we do not have an event scheduled, all seniors are as “welcome as the flowers in May” to use the fitness equipment here at the center. We want to urge every resident to take time this month to acknowledge our older adults as powerful and vital individuals who contribute significantly to our community.

Monday, May 30th, the Senior Center will be closed for Memorial Day.
