Put-in-Bay News reports that Kit Knaser, the treasurer at Put-in-Bay School, announced her retirement at the January 13th Put-in-Bay  School Board meeting. Her last day is July 31, 2015. The school is advertising for someone to fill Kit’s position in the help wanted section of this issue.

Perry Monument Superintendent Blanca Stransky will be heading off to take a new position this spring. Blanca will become deputy superintendent at George Washington Parkway in Virginia, just outside Washington, DC.

The Put-in-Bay Arts Council recently announced it will be presenting an adaptation of the 2003 hit film, Elf. Performances will be on the 27th, 28th, and 29th of March at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall Opera House.

The Lake Erie Islands Historical Society had an interesting Put-in-Bay News item come their way recently. Curator Dan Savage tells us the original plans for the Lake Steamer Benson Ford were donated to the museum. The bow of the Benson Ford sticks out over a cliff on the West Shore and has become an island landmark.

Put-in-Bay Village Clerk Joy Cooper recently release a report to Put-in-Bay News showing the Village of Put-in-Bay has a budget surplus going into 2015 of about $1.4 million. Unlike many municipalities in Ohio, Put-in-Bay has had a budget surplus each year since 2007 when the national economy started to go bad.

Ottawa County had property owners confused about their property taxes when they recently arrived in the mail  There were mistaken delinquent notices, plus the bills erroneously didn’t give owners the option to pay half-year taxes. Bud Stonerook from North Bass found a real nice spud bar on the ice between Put-in-Bay and Rattlesnake Island. He posted a “FOUND” notice on Facebook and got this response from Dale Burris. “I lost one out that way last winter could be it.” It turned out it belonged to Forrest Trisler who was glad to get it back.

The Put-in-Bay Township Port Authority is proud to announce the appointment of the new board member Rick Ziebarth. Rick flies the biplane at the Put-in-Bay airport. Rick will fill the seat of retired Terry Burns. The PA thanks Terry for his many years of dedicated
service on the Board and wish him a happy retirement.

Put-in-Bay News found this bit of information on the Internet this past month. The Postmaster Relief salaries for job postings in Put-in-Bay, OH 43456 are 15% lower than average Postmaster Relief salaries for job postings nationwide. That’s always good information to have handy.

Put-in-Bay News can’t confirm it, but we heard David Dress had what he estimated to be a 5-ft. sturgeon on his line while ice fishing one day in late January. He wasn’t able to land it, but the mere fact something that large is in the lake is a good sign these once giant lake fish are having a comeback.

The Put-in-Bay Port Authority is working on a request that will be submitted to the FAA for approval to close the Put-in-Bay Airport for the special non-aeronautical event, the Put-in-Bay Heritage Road Race Reunion. The race is scheduled for Monday, August 31, and Tuesday, September 1, 2015. The Road Race Reunion has a history for many years on Put-in-Bay and we would like to continue this tradition. The Put-in-Bay Airport will benefit from this closure by receiving reasonable payment for the use of the airport property. The community businesses also benefit financially from this event. If you are a business owner and benefit from the race or an island resident that enjoys the race, we would like to hear from you.

The Port Authority is asking for letters of support for this event. The letters of support will be included in the Road Race proposal. The letters need be sent to the Port Authority by Feb. 20, 2015. The proposal will go to Washington, DC for review and approval. It will take as long as six months before we get an answer. There is no guarantee that the Port Authority will get approval for the Road Race this year. It is vital to have community support for this event. On Saturday, February 21st, depending on safe ice conditions, the 4th Annual Jer-Bear and Kurt Ice Fishing Tournament will take place. Registration will take place between 7 and 9 p.m. on Friday, the 20th, at Topsy Turvey’s. The cost to enter is $25.00. Cash prizes will be rewarded to the heaviest and second heaviest limits of walleye and for the biggest walleye overall. Dan Petro will also be available to register fisherman the morning of the Tournament, They will have to call him at (419) 341-2274.

Fishing will take place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. All fish have to be at the weigh-in at the Reel Bar by 6 p.m. Reel bar has offered to cook walleye catches, as long as they are previously filleted. The banquet starts at 7 p.m. at Tippers, where there will be a Chinese raffle and 50/50. Tee shirts are being sold on the Facebook page for $10, but all the sizes are needed by February 14th. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Jeremy Harlan & Kurt Rohrbacher Scholarship Funds.
