(First Edition) Island News For November 2017

This edition of island news includes the sad announcement that Daniel “Danny” French passed away at Put-in-Bay on October 28th. Danny was an island resident for the last few years. He had been coming to the island all his life with his family. His island jobs included: the Chicken Patio, P.I.B.Y.C., Mossbacks, The Fish Bowl, and most recently, the bar manager at The Boathouse.

Danny went to St. Ignatius High School, The Ohio State University, and had a Master’s of Education from Cleveland State. He loved to travel, the pool, the Browns, Cavaliers, Indians, and his family and friends. He is survived by the love of his life, Audrey Socha; his parents, Richard and Joan French; his sisters Joan French, Anne Thidemann (Liam), Kathryn Taylor (Moe); and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, most of whom love visiting Put-in-Bay. Many dearly miss him and will be remembered for his humor, kindness, generosity, and heart.

The Put-in-Bay Wine Festival at the Put-in-Bay Winery, the first weekend in October, was crowded, and the weather was beautiful. Lots of wine, lots of silent auction baskets, good food, and just plain fun made for this viral event. What a great Oktoberfest it was on the second weekend of the month! This year’s event crushed last year’s record with over 28 kegs of beer sold!

A big thank you goes out to Caitlin Bolyard, Anna McCann, Miranda Riddle, Adam Bommer, Rob Hard, Christine Tibbits, Kayla, Carol Rossfeld Romey, Karen Wilhelm, Cliff Fulton, Bob Wolford, Jack and Loraine Zimmerman, Allie Market, Morgan Furlong for helping pour the beer and to Billy Market, Ty Winchester, Bret Klun, and Caroline Jackson for making everything go so smoothly! It is a huge team effort to make an event like this successful.

Mini Breakfast Buffet at Gas Station-Gary Kowalski at the island gas station tells Put-in-Bay News that the new Breakfast Buffet has proven popular. You can get an excellent hot breakfast anytime from 7 a.m. to noon!

October Mayfly Sighting-Dave Marshall on the West Shore says he spotted a Mayfly on his screen the other day. What’s going on? Mayflies in October?

Music Festival-The Put in Bay Music Festival last June at the Monument was a fun event, and it was recently announced the free, family-friendly music festival, sponsored by Miller Ferry, will return on Saturday, June 9, 2018. More details to come.

Join Today!-Two island groups have membership forms in this issue. The first is the Lake Erie Islands Conservancy on page 6. This group is instrumental in conserving green space on the island. Their efforts regarding the island having natural areas and not unbridled property development are so important.

The second is the Perry Group in Put-in-Bay News. This group works hand in hand with Perry’s Monument to fund special events and help pay for things not usually funded by grants.

Travelling-Tom, Barb Cooper, and their son Jason visited England, the Netherlands, and Belgium in October. Their neighbors Brian Molnar and Judy Kania also joined them. Miyo, Maria Hristovski, Mack McCann, and Joan Booker were in Danube county. Sue Thwaite and Caroline Conrad flew to Rome for several days before returning to the USA on a re-positioning cruise. Island cigar king and pumpkin grower Richard Warren were in China. Marisa Rence and Corey Williams were in Ireland.

Put-in-Bay News reports Mark Mathys and his Marlin Darlin Fishing team spent most of October in Cabo San Lucas competing in the Bisbee’s offshore tournaments. The team finished in 13th place out of over 120 teams from all over the world. The team will be competing in the Los Suenos Billfish series in 2018.
