School News March 2018 School Activities & Events

School News for March 2018. The  2017-18 Put-in-Bay Panther Basketball was another successful season. For the first time in six years, there was a girls’ basketball team. Lauren Peter led the girls’ team to a 4-1 record. The boys finished with a 7-6 record. They were led by Blake and Jack Booker, scoring 27 ppg and 13 ppg, respectively. Playing their last season of Panther basketball was Justin Wilhelm and Erin Urge. Other high school team members included Max Schneider, Talii Steidl, Joe Byrnes, Hannah Lentz, Cecilia Glauser, Nora Ladd, Lucille Schneider, Alex Knauer, and Elena Schroeder. Great job Panthers.

The junior high school news the basketball team struggled this year as they competed against strong teams. The team finished with a 0-5 record but made improvements that will yield results next year. The team members were Kate Byrnes, Max Hristovski, Jacob King, Lillian Frederick, Macy Ladd, Alice Lentz, Melody Many, Charleigh Smith, McKenna Stacy and Doug Steidl. Thank you to Patrick Myers and Put-in-Bay radio, for broadcasting our games during the season.

Thanks to all the sponsors who made the program possible. Listening to the game was a great way for those who could not attend the game to cheer on the Panthers. Our team is looking forward to big things next basketball season. The first-ever “Great Lakes Island Basketball Tournament” will crown an island hardwood champion! This tournament will feature teams from four islands: Beaver Island, Mackinac Island, Washington Island (WI), and Put-in-Bay. The tournament will be played at Beaver Island the first weekend of December. Pay attention to the Put-in-Bay Gazette for information.

GO PANTHERS AND GET YOUR GROWL ON! Congratulations to Mrs. Kowalski, our high school science teacher. Missi was the recipient of a $1,000 Maitland P. Simmons Award to attend and present at the annual National Conference on Science Education in Atlanta. Great job, Mrs. K! Speaking of Mrs. K, on February 16 our school held the annual Science Olympiad. Science Olympiad was another smashing success
this year.

Students in grades K-12 participated in a wide variety of science-themed activities throughout the day. High school students collaborated with elementary students in fun chemistry and engineering activities. Students in grades 6-12 competed in both individual and team events including bridge crusher, engineering design challenge, brains vs. brawn and numerous other activities earning them points towards the prestigious Newton Cup. This year, junior Max Schneider earned this award. Max also set a new school record in the bridge crusher event by holding an overall mass of 320 pounds!

Our tiny island is blessed to have a wide variety of experts in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics who have been willing to act as judges for the science and engineering fair again this year. The panel of judges remarked that it was a difficult decision to determine place-winning projects this year, as there were so many excellent projects. After over an hour of deliberation, judges settled on ninth-grader Elena Schroeder’s project about the effectiveness of acne medications on bacterial growth as the first place winner.

Additionally, senior Tatyana Kowalski received the second place, sophomore Alexandra Knauer received the third place, and senior Gwenavere Market received honorable mention. Students receiving an overall “superior” rating from the team of judges will move on to compete against the best projects in eleven counties at the District Science Fair held at University of Toledo on March 10. Good luck to all those students who will be moving forward!

The class of 2018 Valedictorian and Salutatorian are Put-in-Bay Seniors Tatyana Kowalski and Erin Urge, respectively. Tatey is the daughter of Dan and Valerie Kowalski. She plans to attend Wright State University in the fall to major in theatre design and technology Erin is the daughter of Melinda Myers and Dane Urge. Her plans are to attend Miami University and major in education. Both these girls will deliver a speech at graduation on June 1, along with the commencement keynote speaker, 1995 Put-in-Bay graduate Ty Winchester.

Congratulations Tatey and Erin! This year’s senior class will be leaving on their senior class trip to Hawaii on March 28. Tatey, Erin, Gwena Market, and Justin Wilhelm have raised money for this trip since the seventh grade. They plan to visit Pearl Harbor, an authentic Luau, the Dole Plantation, and many other educational sights. They may even find time to learn how to surf! Have fun seniors and we will report on the trip in a future edition of school news!

Congratulations to Emil Michael (Grade 6), April Baca-Regalado (Grade 6), and McKenna Stacy (Grade 7) for winning the Put-in-Bay Spelling Bee and qualifying for the Ottawa County Spelling Bee on February 6. These three students competed against thirty-two (32) students from six other schools in Ottawa County. Emil made it through four rounds and finished the highest in seventh place. Good job Put-in-Bay students!

In other Put-in-Bay school news, you can see more talented students at the annual Put-in-Bay Talent Show on Friday, March 16 at 7:00 pm. This is always a fun event showcasing our students’ many talents from music performances to stand-up comedy
