Put-in-Bay Church News May 2015 Info & Events

Church News St. Paul’s Sesquicentennial Celebration- May 10th St. Paul’s congregation celebrates the 150th Anniversary of several key events in 2015. On May 10th, everyone is invited to a special 10:30 a.m. “homecoming service” marking the purchase of the property for St. Paul’s. Everyone who has been connected to St. Paul’s is encouraged to come to this particular service, where we will honor those who had the vision to build a church here and the thousands of people who have maintained and developed the resources we use for worship today.

St. Paul’s will host a breakfast for all attending this service at 9:15 a.m. in the parish hall. The anniversary celebration will continue through the summer, culminating with a service on October 10th, 2015, marking the first worship service held in the church on October 8th, 1865. In May 1865, Philanthropist, and well-known Episcopalian, Jay Cooke purchased the front half of the current property from Jose De Rivera.

The deed for the property said Jose’ De Rivera sold the property to Jay Cooke “for a Protestant Episcopal Church and no other purpose. “ Jay Cooke held the deed to the property until his death in 1905 when it passed to his daughter, Laura. Seven years later, Laura began the process of giving the property to The Episcopal Church, which was completed in 1914. St. Paul’s was recently featured in articles published in the Sandusky Register and “Church Life!.

April was an eventful month for Saint John @ the Bay. We hosted our first-ever crosswalk on Good Friday in conjunction with Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church. We started in front of the school and processed through downtown, stopping at various places for prayer, singing, and reflection. We especially thank Father Frank and Sister Lucille for participating and leadership in this ecumenical event. We hope the Cross Walk can be an even bigger ecumenical event next year. Also, we hope that all of you enjoyed Easter with your friends and families.

Another fun event in April was youth volleyball. We got permission to open the Put-in-Bay School gym for the High School students to play volleyball on Sunday evenings. The students seemed to have a great time playing and enjoying each other’s company from 7-9 p.m. We want to thank Mr. Kowalski and Mr. Poe for allowing us to use the gym to host this event and provide a place for the island youth to come together for fun and community.

Even though it is a little way off still, Mother Mary, Sister Lucille, and I are already working on island Vacation Bible Camp. Vacation Bible Camp will be held during the first full week in August. More details will be made available soon. While looking forward, it is essential to note that we are looking forward to the blessing of the fleet in May.

Also, our worship time changes on May 24th, the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, to 6:30 p.m. Worship time for Saint John @ the Bay will remain at 6:30 PM from Memorial Day Sunday through the season. I look forward to another beautiful month of ministry on South Bass Island. Peace be with you, Intern Jeremy Hollingshead
