The Lake Erie Islands Chapter of the Black Swamp Conservancy has several Discover Island Nature Family Programs scheduled for this season. Besides the first two in May, one about birds and the other about island caves, there will be programs featuring Edible plants on June 15th, a kayak tour of the Bay on July 5th, snakes of the Lake Erie Islands on July 30th, and a Kelleys Island Adventure on August 10th. Here are the first two programs coming up in May:

DISCOVER ISLAND NATURE – Islands for the Birds – Sunday, May 1, 2011. Why do birds migrate? Why are the Lake Erie Islands such important stops along their migratory route? During this intergenerational Discover Island Nature session, learn about the behaviors and biology of the bird species that migrate each year through the Lake Erie region.

The Lake Erie Islands Chapter of the Black Swamp Conservancy begins the 2011 Discover Island Nature Family Programs. Begin your day with certified bird bander Tom Bartlett while he demonstrates how to band and record migratory songbirds. During an expert-led nature walk, brush up on your listening and song recognition skills and learn to identify birds by sound and sight. Transportation to and from the ferry dock is included.

DISCOVER ISLAND NATURE – Caves of South Bass – Saturday, May 28, 2011 Share a grand adventure with your family as you explore the caves of South Bass Island. With cave expert Erin Hazelton, investigate the rock formations and the island’s deepest caverns, enjoy a private tour of the historical Perry’s Cave, then move on to explore a privately owned cave, one of the island’s largest.

Have Lunch with Amy Newell Huston, author of Caves of South Bass Island, and end the day at the world’s largest geode-the Crystal Cave. It is required for this tour that there be one adult per child. All programs are held on South Bass Island. Registration begins at approximately 9:30 am and sessions conclude no later than 3:30 pm.

Schedule times, itineraries, ferry schedules, and maps will be sent with your registration materials or may be found on our website. Programs are appropriate for all age levels but require some walking, standing, and lecture time. The cave program requires a ladder to access the private cave. Lunch is included in the registration fee. Vegetarian lunches are available upon request one week before the event.

The Lake Erie Islands Chapter of the Black Swamp Conservancy will be hosting an Americorp Intern for a ten-week internship this
summer. To qualify, you must be 18 years of age and a current college student. In addition to a stipend, you will receive
a voucher for educational expenses or loan repayment.

It would be helpful if the intern was in an environmental field and had housing on the island already. Duties may include assisting at the Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center, working on invasive plants, wildlife surveys, and restoration plans, as well as grant searches and website work, depending on the skill set of the intern chosen. Please contact Lisa Brohl at 419-285-5811 or leic_bsc@cros.net if you are interested or with questions.
