Put-in-Bay Earns Tree City Designation

Put-in-Bay was recognized as Tree City USA- The Village of Put-in-Bay was recognized as a Tree City USA at the Northwest Ohio award ceremony. This is the eighth time Put-in-Bay has been honored with this nationally recognized award. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and Division of Forestry, presented the awards to the Tree City USA communities.

The title of Tree City USA was bestowed on the Village of Put-in-Bay for its ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the quality of life through a tree management program. The Village of Put-in-Bay Tree Commission works with Stephanie Miller, Regional Urban Forester, of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

The Urban Forester recommends a community to the Arbor Day Foundation for this standing. To achieve the title and the honor, a community must meet four standards: A Tree Ordinance, an active Tree Commission, a comprehensive urban forestry program supported by a minimum of two dollars per capita, and an annual Arbor Day proclamation and public observance.  The state of Ohio boasts the most significant number of Tree Cities in the country, with a total of 243.

The Village of Put-in-Bay is the smallest community to participate in this program. Stephanie Miller, Regional Urban Forester, stated, “Ohio is so fortunate to have such unique communities and dedicated citizens. It’s an honor to review Northwest Ohio’s Tree City USA applications. Keep up the wonderful work.

“Members of the Village Tree Commission are Lisa Brohl, Kelly Faris, and Kendra Koehler. Each member is appointed for a three-year term by the Council of the Village of Put-in-Bay and serves without compensation.

The Tree City designation is an honor bestowed upon cities that demonstrate a commitment to maintaining and expanding their urban forest. It is a recognition of the efforts made by these cities to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of their surroundings and promote the many benefits that trees bring to the community. In this article, we will explore the significance of the Tree City designation and delve into the benefits and responsibilities associated with it.

The Arbor Day Foundation administers the Tree City designation in partnership with the United States Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. To qualify for this designation, a city must meet four essential requirements: establish a tree board or department, pass a tree care ordinance, allocate an annual budget for urban forestry, and observe Arbor Day with a public celebration.

The designation holds significant meaning for cities and their residents. Firstly, it showcases a city’s dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability. Trees play a crucial role in mitigating the effects of climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, reducing the urban heat island effect, and improving air quality. Tree Cities actively contribute to combating climate change and creating a healthier, greener environment for their inhabitants.

Secondly, the Tree City designation promotes community involvement and engagement. Tree boards and departments work closely with residents, organizations, and volunteers to educate, raise awareness, and encourage participation in tree planting and care activities. By involving the community, cities foster a sense of ownership and pride in their urban forest, enhancing civic pride and a strong sense of community.

Furthermore, the Tree City designation provides a sustainable urban forestry management framework. Tree Cities develop and implement comprehensive tree care ordinances that guide the maintenance, preservation, and removal of trees within their jurisdiction. They establish tree planting programs, conduct regular tree inventories, and prioritize tree maintenance and preservation efforts. These measures ensure the long-term health and vitality of the urban forest, promoting its sustainability for future generations.

Another significant benefit of the Tree City designation is its positive impact on property values and economic development. Trees contribute to the aesthetic appeal of neighborhoods and commercial areas, making them more attractive to residents, businesses, and visitors. Studies have shown that communities with well-maintained urban forests experience increased property values, higher retail sales, and more significant economic growth.

However, being designated as a Tree City also comes with responsibilities. Tree Cities must commit to ongoing tree care, including pruning, planting, and maintenance. They must allocate sufficient funds in their annual budget for urban forestry activities, ensuring that resources are available to support the city’s tree programs and initiatives. Additionally, Tree Cities must continue to educate their residents about trees’ importance and their role in environmental sustainability.

In conclusion, the Tree City designation is a prestigious recognition that signifies a city’s commitment to environmental stewardship, community involvement, and sustainable urban forestry management. Tree Cities promote the numerous benefits of trees while creating a sense of pride and community engagement. By embracing the responsibilities associated with the designation, these cities contribute to a greener, healthier, and more vibrant future for their residents.
