Put-in-Bay News May 2016 NOT AN APRIL FOOL-What started as an April Fool’s joke in Put-in-Bay News has turned into a Giveaway. On December 1, 2016, Miller Boat Line will pick one Put-in-Bay or Middle Bass Island Season Pass holder of ten years or more to win a 2017 Miller Ferry Season Pass.

LAKE ERIE WATER LEVEL UP-This April’s Lake Erie water level was about 14 inches above the long-term normal for April.

CONGRATULATIONS- Karina Kowalski (Put-in-Bay High School 2013) and Elliot Kowalski (Put-in-Bay High School 2015) on being inducted into nationally recognized honor societies for academic achievement, high standards of academic integrity, leadership, and service. Karina, a Junior at Wittenberg University, has been elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board. Elliot, a freshman at Purdue University, into Alpha Lambda Delta Phi Eta Sigma.

JANE COATES WILDLIFE TRAIL CLEAN UP- Put-in-Bay News reports There will be a workday at the Jane Coates Wildflower Trail and Ladd Carr Wildlife Woods near Maple Leaf Cemetery on Saturday, May 21st, starting at 10 a.m. to remove invasive plant species. Lisa Brohl and AmeriCorps Intern Jenna Prahst will be on hand to educate everyone on these plants and view some late-season wildflowers. Read more about Put-in-Bay Parks here

GOAT’S ISLAND-WIDE CLEAN UP-If you would like to help clean up the island, the Goat will have it’s annual Island-Wide Clean up on Tuesday, May 10th. Meet at the Goat at 11 a.m.

COMFY THIS SUMMER!-Joe’s Bar tells Put-in-Bay News they have something new for the 2016 season. It’s heat and air conditioning.
With temperatures predicted to be warmer than average, this summer sounds like having A/C is a good idea.

ARE YOU CRAFTY?-Do you have a particular skill or project you could teach to others? If so, you could teach a CREATE Workshop for Erie Islands Library! Workshops run for one to two hours. Stipends will be paid. Stop by or call the Erie Islands Library at 285-4004 for more information!

CAFE PRESS-The Lake Erie Islands Conservancy now has a Cafe Press site set up for the Conservancy. You can order clothing, water bottles, etc., with the Conservancy logo on it, and the Conservancy receives a small donation for each purchase.

PRE-ORDER FOOD ON YOUR CELL OR COMPUTER Kim Stoiber Morrisson from Frosty Bar and Family Pizza tells Put-in-Bay News that you can now go online or on your cell phone and pre-order breakfast, pizza, or burritos. This is especially great for those who don’t want to wait in line.

Island-wide garage sale There is nothing like finding that unique two-dollar item at a yard or garage sale and then seeing it valued for thousands on Antique Road Show! Time to shop and sell. The yard sale season is nearly upon us again here on South Bass Island. Time to dust off those unused items in the attic, garage, or basement and get involved in the most fun recycling program on the island. Sign up for this year’s yard sale and get your home or business on our map. The island-Wide Garage Sale will take place on Saturday, May 21st.

No night-time helicopter flights-There was a Put-in-Bay Township Port Authority meeting in April dealing with night-time commercial helicopter flights at Put-in-Bay Airport. There was standing room only at a public hearing on Saturday, May 16th, at the Township building. Many in the audience were already concerned about the noisy daytime helicopter ride flights going over their property and didn’t want them during the night, too. The meeting was over in just a few minutes when it was announced the application requesting permission for night flights was withdrawn.

Mooring Buoy Lottery-If you are interested in keeping your boat on one of the mooring buoys in Put-in-Bay Harbor for the 2016 season, you’ll be interested in knowing the Put-in-Bay Township Port Authority is offering ten mooring buoys for seasonal rent from Memorial Day to Labor for $1500 for the season.

Put-in-Bay property owners will be awarded the first selection in an email lottery starting at noon on May 15th. Email your bid to mooringpibbuoys@aol.com. The 8th Annual PIBRRR (Put-in-Bay Road Race Reunion) will take place from August 29th through 31st this summer, according to Put-in-Bay News May 2016 Now is the time to get ready! You will find links to the 2016 Road Race Entry Form, eligibility list, race rules and regulations, and more on their website.

You can also find event flyer information, a map of the spectator areas for the airport races, a recap of the 2015 races, a map of the island with key locations, plus where to find the group on Facebook. To help get the word out about Put-in-Bay Road Race Reunion 2016, you can also download the 2016 event flyer, print out copies (color or black and white is fine) and distribute or post vintage sports car nuts that might congregate.

Back to the Wild presents a program on May 4th,  an animal rehabilitation clinic in Castalia, Ohio, that will visit Put-in-Bay on Wednesday, May 4,2016. She will bring her critters for a show at 3:15 p.m. at the Put-in-Bay Town Hall. Don’t miss it!!!! The Put-in-Bay Recreation Committee, the Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center, and the Lake Erie Islands Chapter of the Black Swamp Conservancy sponsor her visit. Everyone is welcome to attend.
