  • Put-in-Bay School News January 2015 All The Fun Things Happening At School

This is the time of year for giving and counting our blessings. Last month, the Put-in-Bay School National Honor Society conducted a food drive for the Ottawa County Salvation Army. Thanks to our students, needy families received food for the holidays. As part of the Panther Pride Community Service Program, 7th graders Cecilia Glauser, Carin Kirsch, Hannah Lentz, Frankie Porche, and Morgan Stacy visited the residents of the Providence Care Facility in Sandusky. They put smiles on everyone they met!

End-of-semester exams will be on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, January 14 – 16. The end of the semester is Friday, January 16th. Parent/Teacher Conferences this year will be an all-day affair, starting at 8 p.m. and concluding at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28th. This being the case, students will not have school on Wednesday, January 28th. Parents are encouraged to call the school to make an appointment to meet with their child’s teachers.

There will be a grade 5 through 8 Spelling Bee in the multi-purpose room on Friday, January 23rd at 1:45 p.m. Winners may be eligible to participate in the Ottawa County Spelling Bee. The annual Verhoff dinner will be held Wednesday, February 4th, at the Town Hall from 5 to 7 p.m. Donations for the dinners support the Jeffrey Verhoff Scholarship Fund.

On Friday, February 13th, our grade 6 – 12 students will compete in the annual Put-in-Bay School Science Olympiad. They will apply what they have learned in science classes to problem-solve, create, and correctly answer science-related questions. K –
5 students have fun science activities planned for that day, as well.

Speaking of fun learning activities, Mrs. Rence had some math enrichment students participate in the “Hour of Code” last month. Students in 57,000 classrooms in the world of computer programming for a week. Our students have been learning computer programming for a couple of years and, this year, developed math computer games from a programming language called “SCRATCH,” designed by MIT. On the other hand, students in the language arts enrichment program produced a book of their favorite poems and read them aloud at an evening poetry recital in the library.

Congratulations to our high school academic challenge team for finishing in third place in the north division of the Quiz Bowl League.  School team members included: Elliot Kowalski, Gunnar Auger, Meredith Engel, Kaylyn Goebel, Carter Pugh, Sophia Schroeder, Erin Urge, and Tatyana Kowalski. Coach Schuffenecker’s high school basketball team is enjoying another successful season. Come to see the Panthers in action some Saturday morning this month!

This winter, we will utilize the “School Reach” parent notification system to announce school delays and cancellations. Please keep your phone nearby on mornings when inclement weather may delay or cancel school. If you have changed your phone number recently, please notify the school.
