Put-in-Bay Diary December 2016 Everything You May Have Missed

Put-in-Bay Diary December 2016 Thurs-Dec. 1st – The Put-in-Bay High School basketball teams leave Put-in-Bay for the long bus trip north to Mackinac Island to play their Lake team.

Put-in-Bay Diary Fri-Dec. 2nd – Eighty-nine Panther team members and island fans tour the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.

Put-in-Bay Diary Sat., Dec. 3rd – Eighth grader Blake Booker leads the Put-in-Bay Panthers to a victory over the Mackinac scoring 21 points in a 49 to 41 game in the morning.

Put-in-Bay Diary Sun Dec. 4th – The Put-in-Bay Panther basketball team and many of those who traveled to Mackinac Island to watch the games left on the 9 a.m. ferry to return home to Put-in-Bay Ohio. The battery in the team bus is dead which delays their arrival at the Catawba Dock for the scheduled ferry ride home. The Put-in-Bay Ferry Schedule runs a special late boat to accommodate them.

Put-in-Bay Diary Mon-Dec. 5th – Put-in-Bay Village Council holds its monthly workshop meeting.

Diary December 2016 Tues -Dec. 6th – It is the last day to apply for the GS-04 Park Guide position at Perry’s Monument. The DeRivera Park Trust meets at the Put-in-Bay Town Hall. It was hoped the Trustees might be interested in selling Cooper’s Woods to the Lake Erie Islands Conservancy, but nothing came of it. Don’t toss your “Save Cooper’s Woods” signs out yet

Diary December 2016 Wed-Dec. 7th – Workers are putting in a new fire hydrant at the corner of Delaware and Hartford Avenues. It’s “Ugly Christmas Sweater Night” for the euchre players at Tipper’s Put-in-Bay Restaurant.

Diary December 2016 Thurs-Dec. 8th – High temperature was in the mid to upper 20’s with lows dipping into the teens and winds up to 30 m.p.h. Rudy Rence is at Topsy Turvey’s leveling the pool table there.

Diary December 2016 Fri-Dec. 9th – Catawba Dock is slippery with a fresh coating of ice. By mid-night, Put-in-Bay Ohio is white with a light snow covering.

Diary December 2016 Sat-Dec. 10th – The Put-in-Bay Panthers had their game canceled when parents of the mainland team members they were going to play were concerned about the kids taking the ferry to Put-in-Bay. Bobbi Dobos is taking holiday pictures at the Town Hall. Scott and Caroline Jackson have an old-fashion Tom & Jerry party at their home on Chapman Rd. The Put-in-Bay Girl Scouts helped deliver holiday gift bags with fruit, candy, cookies and a bottle of Heineman grape juice from the Recreation Committee to the island seniors.

Sun-Dec. 11th – It snows a good part of the day. Breakfast with Santa takes place at the Town Hall. This is a really great holiday event for the island kids and proud parents. The last Put-in-Bay Ferry canceled.

Mon-Dec. 12th – The weather outside is frightful. The last Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce meeting of 2016 rescheduled our for January 2nd at 1 p.m. at the Town Hall.

Tues-Dec-13th – The motor vessel “Wm. Market” passes by the lighthouse heading for the downtown Put-in-Bay Docks winter berth after completing the last extended schedule trip of the 2016 season. There are fireworks set off as the ferry passes Put-in-Bay Yacht Club. The Christmas concert takes place at the Put-in-Bay school gym.

Wed-Dec-14th No one went hungry on Put-in-Bay as the Senior Lunch takes place at the Put-in-Bay Senior Center and the Lake Erie Islands Conservancy potluck takes place at the South Bass Island Lighthouse Potluck. Several reports of seeing several all-white Tundra swans on the lake. They usually show up when mainland marshes freeze and there is still open water around the islands. Russ Brohl sees four lingering red-winged blackbirds at the Monument.

Thurs-Dec 15th Lake Erie is ice covered as far as most can see. By afternoon, there is open water in much of the Bay.

Fri-Dec 16th Put-in-Bay Village Council meets in executive session with Village Solicitor George Wilber. Sue Seaberg celebrates 60th birthday.

Sat-Dec. 17th – A light rain in near-freezing temperature stops air service to and from Put-in-Bay, but not before the Panther basketball team makes it home from Friday’s game on the mainland. For the second Saturday in a row, the Put-in-Bay Panther basketball game has to be canceled. A group of hardy souls places wreaths on the graves of veterans in the cemeteries on South Bass, Middle, and North Bass Islands.

It is part of the Wreaths Across America program. A big thank you goes out to Kelly and Marty Faris who organized the event. A baby shower takes place for Katherine Woischke at Topsy Turvey’s. Tipper’s holds its Christmas party. Linda, Marisa, and Rudy Rence host guests at their home on Put-in-Bay Rd. in the evening.

Put-in-Bay Diary Sun-Dec. 18th – Steve Stapleton and Rod Karr fly to the mainland for a little shopping. Bird counters are out counting birds for the annual island bird count. Dustin Shaffer from Island Air Taxi flies many take-out pizzas over to Put-in-Bay from the mainland.

Mon-Dec. 19th – Some of Put-in-Bay’s roads make for great ice skating. If you had ice skates, you could have ice skated from Catawba Ave. to the West Shore on Mitchell Rd. Low temperature for the day came about 9 a.m. with 9.9 degrees. Tues., Dec. 20th -Solstice Tournament. Ask Ed Hubner how he did?

Wed-Dec. 21st – It’s the first day of winter and there’s already ice around the Put-in-Bay islands. The Island General Store holds its annual Christmas party in the afternoon! There are appetizers and an adult beverage to celebrate Christmas and thank everyone for their patronage!

Thurs-Dec. 22nd – The 2016 Put-in-Bay Yacht Club Commodore, Bill Boag, falls while bowling and ends up spending the holidays in the hospital after both knees are operated on.

Fri.-Dec. 23rd – The South Channel between the Lime Kiln Dock and Catawba was filled with ice a few days before, but is now pretty much open water.

Sat-Dec. 24th – Among those who enjoyed breakfast at the Black Squirrel Bed and Breakfast are Ty Burgess, Jeanne Burgess, Chip Duggan, Dee Dee Duggan and Chuck Lunt Walt Duff Junior dons his Christmas outfit to get into the holiday spirit. Christie Ontko and her husband Cliff Fulton are at the Upcountry Farmers Market in Pukaloni, Hawaii, peddling the OntkOrganix products she makes.

Sun-Dec. 25th – One of the things Julene Market gets for Christmas is a teepee.

Mon-Dec. 26th – The Put-in-Bay Senior Center is closed on December 26th for the Christmas Holiday.

Tues. Dec. 27th – open water between Lime Kiln and Catawba. There is crap ice in Stone Cove, north side of Monument and west side of Middle Bass

Wed-Dec. 28th – Shawn Dages posts on social media a photo of a 30+ pound coyote he shot on the island. It’s a beautiful sunny day for Paula Ladd’s birthday.

Thurs-Dec. 29th – Put-in-Bay residents awake to wet snow cover on the island, but that doesn’t stop the Put-in-Bay Ferry from running again.

Put-in-Bay Diary Fri-Dec. 30th – Billy Market is becoming quite the weather swami as he posts the ferries will probably run through Tuesday, January 3rd, before Boreas, the Greek god of the cold north wind and the bringer of winter, returns.

Put-in-Bay Diary Sat-Dec. 31st – At midnight the bell at the Put-in-Bay Town Hall is rung to help those celebrating the New Year.
